Somerset House screens three hit shows from Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

Somerset House transforms its 18th century courtyard into an open-air opera house for three days this summer when it screens three shows from Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
Opera is some of the fanciest fun you can have in London and prices can be astronomical but the clever entertainment elves at Somerset House are getting out the big screens from their film season and treating Londoners to opera at a snitch of the price.
From Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd August there'll be a truck load of workshops, talks and family events during the day and screenings of three great operas as the sun goes down for £10-15.
Billy Budd, showing on the Friday, is based on Herman Melville’s allegorical tale about the battle between pure good and blind evil. This production marks the operatic directorial debut of Michael Grandage, Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse.
The Rake's Progress, showing on the Saturday, is the brilliant Faustian tale of Tom Rakewell who makes a pact with the devil in pursuit of big-city vanities and increasingly exotic pleasures. His story also features a loveless marriage to the bearded lady from a local fair. The classic tale of Hansel and Gretel shows on the Sunday.
We're all invited to bring rugs, cushions (but no chairs), and snacks (and sunscreen) to get comfy. Picnicking in the Somerset House courtyard surrounded by some of Londons finest architecture, under the fine tuned voices of Glyndebourne opera stars can only be made finer if your picnic is particularly fancy. We can't help you with that but Fortnum & Mason picnics can be pre-ordered from the Somerset House website – sweet!
