Sister Act, The Lion King, Les Miserables and Wicked are among the sell out shows breaking ticket sales records in London. Recession be damned.

Over Christmas, Sister Act broke London Palladium's record by grossing the highest box office takings for a single performance over the holiday period. Previously set by The Sound of Music, Sister Act grossed £115,000 on December 28th. Sheila Hancock who plays Mother Superior has extended her contract and will continue in the role until May 29th. The show has now sold over half a million tickets.
Continuing the movie-based musical success, The Lion King has become the ninth longest running musical in the history of the West End after ending 2009, its tenth year, by grossing £32 million. Its best week to date saw 18,757 theatregoers attend nine performances between 28th December and 3rd January, grossing £800,000 in ticket sales.
After being immortalised on celluloid in the 1939 film staring Judy Garland, Glinda the good witch and Elphaba, her not so nice counterpart have made Wicked another record breaking success. 2009 was its fourth year in the West End and saw takings of £27 million. Les Miserables which has been running in London since 1985 had a milestone year and performed its 10,000th performance on January 5th.
