Since the hit West End musical Oliver! posted closing notices, the London theatre scene has been abound with rumours that Shrek the Musical will arrive in its place at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The gossip mills seem to think that D list “actress” Amanda Holden who has won a fan base through appearances as a judge on the ITV reality show Britain's Got Talent has auditioned for the leading female role in the UK run of this screen-to-stage adaptation.

Shrek The Musical is due to arrive on stage in Chicago this July and had its Broadway opening 18 months ago. The green light to go ahead and get excited about a West End run was given back in late 2009 and now its opening here is predicted for May/June 2011. Under the wings of Sam Mendes' Neal Street Productions and Hollywood studio Dreamworks the show will be revamped for its UK run with new songs, better illusions, and a show more invested in audience emotions. How sweet of them.

Shrek is a fairytale parody about an ugly green ogre who reluctantly falls in love with a princess after rescuing her with the help of his smart-mouth donkey sidekick voiced by Eddie Murphy in the film. The four main parts up for grabs are Shrek, Princess Fiona, her father Lord Farquaad and Donkey. The various cast wish-lists for the London run will include the likes of Sheridan Smith currently blowing crowds away at Savoy Theatre as the lead in Legally Blonde and Summer Strallen who recently played Maria in The Sound of Music and can currently be seen in Love Never Dies. Some have even suggested Girls Aloud's Kimberly Walsh for the part...
