Naima Khan looks at the strengths of Angle Theatre's Be Discovered 2011 project
Angle Theatre's Be Discovered 2011 project is looking for scripts from the general public, to present new ideas to the sometimes static world of theatre. There are a few writing competitions out there where you can submit a script in the hope that it'll be staged somewhere, one day, but there are a few reasons I like this one in particular.
1. For starters, it encourages first-time playwrights, which means new ideas. Sometimes London theatre is a little stagnant with an untold number of revivals constantly on stage. I for one don't think I can sit through another Ayckbourn, and has anyone else noticed, Neil LaBute's stuff is a lot more bearable with a celebrity cast? Earlier this year I saw two of the most remarkable plays I've seen in ages and they were both written by first-time playwrights. Mogadishu, a hilarious and dramatic look at racism in high school came from the mind of a teacher, Vivienne Franzmann, and I'm still thinking about the wording in Andrew Sheridan's dark, poetic Winterlong. These aren't wholly original themes, but they were presented in a brand new light.
2. It's local. The project aims to gather script submissions from people who live or work in Brent, Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing, Hounslow, Harrow and Hillingdon. It targets selected regions of the city to draw on the diverse voices tucked away in London's suburbs, which means it's a good sized competition, and you have a good chance of your script getting noticed.
3. Lastly, it's happening in conjunction with Bush Theatre. Definitely an undisputed heavyweight amongst London's new writing venues, this is the place to showcase your stuff. Not only do they stay in touch with their many success stories but they have an appreciation for their local writers as well as their local audiences.
Scripts need to be in by 30th June and the project is open to anyone over the age of eighteen from any occupation, or none, with no writing background required. Click here for details on how to submit your script.
