Sheridan Smith, Alan Davies and Jenny Eclair host the Whatsonstage.com Awards 2012, revealing a few unexprected winners.

The Whatsonstage.com Awards, theatre's most publicly engaging awards ceremony took place on Sunday 18th February after a staggering 70,000 theatregoers voted for their favourites in 26 categories. The event was hosted by Sheridan Smith, Alan Davies and Jenny Eclair

Unlike last year, the awards failed to nod to the amazing work happening on London's fringe scene but the winners revealed a number of dark horses including the brilliant, but not exactly hip, Vanessa Redgrave who won Best Actress in a Play for her part in Driving Miss Daisy. Similarly, for her turn in Season's Greetings at National Theatre, Catherine Tate took home Best Supporting Actress over favourite to win Sheridan Smith who was nominated for her role in Flare Path opposite Sienna Miller.

Tate and her co-star David Tennant also won one of the more obscure categories, the AKA Theatre Event of the Year, which awarded their reunion on stage in Much Ado About Nothing. Tennant was up for Best Actor in a Play but lost out to James Corden for his role in One Man, Two Guvnors.

Musical gongs went to Richard Fleeshman who took home Best Actor in a Musical and  Amanda Holden who won Best Actress for her role in Shrek the Musical. Her co-star Nigel Harman won Best Supporting Actor.

Unsurprisingly, Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly's Matilda The Musical won Best New Musical with Minchin also taking home Best Newcomer while Best West End show went to War Horse.
