Adam and Joe win gold Sony Award

The BBC6 presenters receive the highest comedy accolade at the prestigious radio awards.

BBC6 Music's Adam and Joe were last night presented with a Gold Award for 'Best Comedy Show' at the Sony Radio Awards - the UK’s most coveted radio honours.

Having won three silvers last year for 'Best Entertainment', 'Best Comedy' and 'Best Competition', the duo finally landed the top prize with judges commending the programme on its "strong originality in both its content and its formats - musical pastiches, features, presenter-led sequences and banter. It interacts with its audience in a refreshing, engaging way."

Adam Buxton (or should we say Dr Buckles?) accepted the award without co-presenter Joe 'Cornballs' Cornish who was busy directing his first feature film, Attack the Block. On accepting the award, Buxton read out a message from Cornish saying: "If we win why don't you strip naked and shout: 'Save 6 Music.'"

This was the second award of the night for the threatened radio station after former Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker picked up the 'Rising Star' Award for his music show. He also jumped to the defence of BBC6 saying: ''Since I am an elected majority you will forgive me if I have a little rant. The BBC must offer licence players value for money and I'm not saying what we get paid but they do it for the love of music and it is certainly value for money. 6 Music is never going to be the biggest station in the UK but it would be devastating if it was to close."

In the meantime, while we wait to hear whether the much-loved music station will be axed, we hope Adam and Joe will return to our airwaves very soon - the show has been on hold since January due to Cornish's filming commitments, which also include co-writng a new Stephen Spielberg film The Adventures of Tintin.
