April Comedy: best new material

31 March, 2010
by: Spoonfedcomedy

The Spoonfed Comedy Team takes a look at some of the best new material shows in London this month.

Sketch and character

Tuesday 6th April
Adam Riches: Fresh Meat
@ Lowdown (Albany)

Hot on the heels of his sell-out Soho Theatre shows, hilarious character comedian Adam Riches returns to the Lowdown to present new material from some of the best names in sketch and character comedy. Special guests include inventive sketch duo Cardinal Burns and if.comedy nominee 2008 Pippa Evans.

5th and 26th April
Colin Hoult: Enemy of the World @ Etcetera Theatre

One of the hottest character acts to emerge in 2009, Colin Hoult follows up his critically-acclaimed Carnival of Monsters with a preview of his brand new show for 2010. Prepare for 'a study in villainy, a trip through the dark recesses of the soul and a feast of tragi-comic delights'.

From 5th April
We Are Klang
@ Pleasance Theatre

The weird, hilarious and sometimes downright creepy trio We Are Klang (BBC3's The Wall) return to the Pleasance this month with a new material show. Expect extreme silliness, puerile humour and sketches that may trigger hysteria and nausea.

Stand-Up

Sunday 18th April
Michael Legge and Andrew Collins @ Hen and Chickens Theatre

Respected stand-ups Michael Legge and Andrew Collins test out some new pre-Fringe stuff tonight. Legge will present 30 minutes of frank vulgarity and imaginary nudity, then Collins' will present his tentatively-titled work Secret Dancing, where he unveils urban survival techniques including how to dance on public transport and walk next to a pigeon. Brilliant.

Anti-comedy

From Saturday 17th April
Edward Aczel @ Hen and Chickens Theatre

Account manager by day, comedian by night, Ed Aczel (who reduced Jimmy Carr to tears of laughter during the judging process of his Comedy Idol comp) presents new thoughts on ambition, politics and why he would've preferred to be an ambassador (or in theory, a rock star) in his new work-in-progress, with the catchy title: Ever Tried. Ever Failed. No Matter. Try Again. Fail Again. Fail Better.

As Seen On TV

15th-16th April
Katy Brand and her Big Ass: Tour Preview
@ artsdepot

Ahead of her 'Big Ass' tour, character comedian Katy Brand tries out some new material at North Finchley's artsdepot. Returning to the stage after a lengthy break working in the gogglebox industry, the British Comedy Award winner will perform her unique style of celebrity satire, music spoofs and more in the artsdepot's small studio theatre.

Tuesday 20th April
Jack Whitehall @ Hen and Chickens Theatre

Eddie 'Best Newcomer' nominee 2009 and star of Mock the Week and 8 out of 10 Cats Jack Whitehall is test-running his new show tonight. His confident stage manner, cutting quips and energetic anecdotes have made him one of the most sought-after young comedians on the circuit today.
