Whether you're a comedy aficionado having trouble convincing your tight-fisted friends to get along to a gig, or a novice wanting to get into stand-up shows but unwilling to commit that precious last tenner before pay day, you'll enjoy Spoonfed's guide to the best free comedy gigs in town.

Angel Comedy @ Camden Head
Saturdays, 7:45pm
This club (located on Camden Passage) has been pulling in some  great line-ups of late. Many performers tend to be BBC, Hackney Empire, and Amused Moose New Act of the Year finalists and there is usually a big name headliner thrown into the mix. Previous acts have included Tony Law, Trevor Lock, Simon Munnery, Abandoman and Nick Helm.

Tom Webb's Party Piece
@ Queens Head
Tuesdays, 8pm
Comedian/playwright/screenwriter Tom Webb is one of the stalwarts of the London circuit, compering and performing material at some of the best clubs around. The latest jewel to his crown is this open mic comedy night, which is open to pretty much anything as long as it's funny. Expect one man bands, stand-ups, magic, dance, snake charmers... you get the idea.

Lewis Schaffer is Free Until Famous
@ The Source Below

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8pm
Contentious New York comic Lewis Schaffer (pictured) can currently be seen weekly in the downstairs bar of Soho's Source Cafe, delivering material ranging from feelings on his ex-wife to phone-smashing yobs at Edinburgh in his typically sharp, biting style. There's a voluntary collection at the end of the show, so essentially you're paying what you think it's worth.

The Only Comedy Club in London
@ Camden Head

Last Sunday of the month, 7:30pm
A new comedy club for the discerning comedy fan, it has an emphasis on the bold and original with unique comedic talent every week and a top headliner.

Set Up... Punchline Comedy
@ The Builders Arms

Mondays, 8pm
This Monday night comedy club in South Kensington was originally a monthly affair, but due to popular demand it's gone weekly. Catch some of the best up-and-coming and established names on the circuit performing new material from 2011 Edinburgh 'Best Newcomer' nominee Josh Widdicombe to Russell Howard's Good News star Joel Dommett.
