British comedy dominates Rose d'Or Awards

Turns out we really are the funniest race in the world - at least according to the TV industry's top execs.

The British may bignote themselves about being the world's funniest nation, and it turns out that's actually not unwarranted. In today's nomination announcements for the prestigious Rose d'Or international television awards, British comedy has come out on top by a long shot, with 17 out of the 22 programmes nominated in the comedy categories being from the UK.

Sitcoms particularly dominated the mix - FM, Home Time, Krod Mandoon, Outnumbered, Pete Vs Life, Psychoville, The Inbetweeners and This is Jinsy were all nominated for a Best Sitcom gong. In fact, the only show not of British origin in the category was Danish sitcom Kristian.

Other, clearly less humorous nations fared better in the overall Best Comedy category - shows from Belgium, Germany, Finland and Australia were nominated alongside the C4 Comedy Gala, La La Land, Russell Howard's Good News, School Of Comedy, The Armstrong and Miller Show, The Impressions Show with Culshaw and Stephenson, the Kevin Bishop Show and even the Frankie Boyle Show, which has yet to actually be broadcast here. Presumably the judges thought since every other comedy was so darn awesome, they'd throw that one in there in anticipation.

Further British comic programs were also honoured in the annual awards, which take place in Switzerland and are heading into their 50th year in 2010. Misfits was nominated for Best Drama, Cast Offs for the Social Award and the Sharon Osbourne edition of A Comedy Roast was nominated for Best Variety.
