The star of a West End comedy leaps to the aid of a woman who collapses during his show.

The star of Fringe hit comedy Eric's Tales of the Sea gave an audience member first aid on Saturday night when she collapsed during his show at the Soho Theatre.

Ex-submariner Eric (who prefers not to reveal his surname) was midway through his story-based show about life on a Royal Navy Nuclear Submarine, when a woman got up from her seat and collapsed just outside the auditorium. The award-winning performer reacted quickly and ran off the stage to help her. Finding the woman slumped on the floor unconcious, he remembered his first aid training from his Navy days and put her into the recovery position.

“I was just getting to the part of my show which is particularly emotional and often has the audience shedding a tear, but the reaction has never been as extreme as this before” said Eric.

"I put the lady into the recovery position while the Theatre staff called for an ambulance. I checked her pulse and breathing and was about to re-enter the auditorium to utter those immortal worlds, 'Is there a doctor in the house?' when I was joined in the foyer by Dr Ramesh Sarma, who was in the audience" Eric added.

“I found the lady on the floor but Eric had the situation under control” said Dr Sarma.

Once the woman was taken care of, Eric returned to finish his show to a sold-out crowd. She later regained conciousness and, along with Dr Sarma, was given free tickets by Eric for next week's performance. Eric's Tales of the Sea: A Submariner's Yarn was a suprise hit at the Edinburgh festival in 2009, winning the Three Weeks Editors Award and subsequently developing into a 28-day national tour.

The show returns to the Soho Theatre for two final days this weekend from 16-17th April.
