The comedy veterans call it quits after 25 years together.

Sad to say the first item on today's comedy news agenda is the sort that makes you want to give up on relationships altogether and live alone with your cat and a bottle of brandy - Dawn French and Lenny Henry have ended their 25-year marriage.

In a statement released this morning, the couple's spokesman Neil Reading said French and Henry had made the decision to split in October, but have been living together since to work out the terms of their separation.

"The separation is entirely amicable and they fully intend to maintain their close friendship", Reading said.

The comedy power couple met in 1980 when Henry became involved in French's sketch group, the Comic Strip. They married in 1984 at St Paul's Church in Covent Garden and have one adopted daughter, Billie.

Over the course of their relationship, the pair became two of the most successful names in British comedy, Henry as a result of The Lenny Henry Show, which had a 10 year long run in the '80s, and French for her collaborations with Jennifer Saunders and '90s sitcom The Vicar of Dibley.

Like most couples in the public eye, they've had their fair share of tabloid troubles - in 1999, Henry was accused of cheating on French with an Australian receptionist, and also of sexually harassing strippers while on vacation in Tenerife. He soon after checked into that hottest of celeb hangouts, the Priory Clinic, claiming to be suffering from depression.

So it's sad to see that even after managing to move past seedy naked-lady-related allegations, they've decided to call it quits anyway. And worst of all, you know that would have been one damn funny household.
