Celebrating diversity: the nominees are in for the 32nd Edinburgh Comedy Awards.

The nominees for this year's Foster's Edinburgh Fringe Comedy Awards have been announced today, with plenty of inventive comics in the running.

Comics including Tony Law (pictured), Claudia O'Doherty and Doctor Brown are shortlisted for the top prize; while David Trent and Daniel Simonsen are up for the 'Best Newcomer' Award for their debut solo shows.

The nominations for Foster’s Best Comedy Show are:

Claudia O’Doherty: The Telescope
Doctor Brown: Befrdfgth
James Acaster: Prompt
Josie Long: Romance and Adventure
Pappy’s: Last Show Ever!
Tony Law: Maximum Nonsense

The nominations for Foster’s Best Newcomer are:

Daniel Simonsen: Champions
David Trent: Spontaneous Comedian
Discover Ben Target
Joe Lycett: Some Lycett Hot
Sam Fletcher: Good on Paper

Nica Burns, Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards producer said:

"The nominees sum up an extraordinarily inventive year for comedy at this year’s Fringe. The shows demonstrate all the comedic art forms -  standup, mime, sketch and multi-media experimentation. The performers are all immensely charismatic and often thought-provoking whilst being extremely funny. Two excellent nomination lists."

There are three prizes up for grabs at the awards show on Saturday  – ‘Best Newcomer’ for a performer or act staging their first full-length show; the ‘panel prize’, for the act or show that most captures the spirit of the Fringe, and the most coveted title of all – 'Best Comedy Show’, given to the most outstanding and original show. This winner receives a £10,000 prize, while the Best Newcomer and panel prize winner get a cheque for £5000.
