Will Only Fools and Horses translate as well as The Office across the pond?



Mon Dieu! Only Fools and Horses could be the latest British sitcom to be remade for American audiences, after the ABC network announced it had commissioned a pilot from the writers of Scrubs.

Producers have confirmed that they will be keeping the original title of the classic sitcom series, which will: "chronicle the misadventures of two streetwise brothers and their ageing grandfather as they concoct outrageous, morally questionable get rich quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires." 

How it will translate to US audiences is yet to be seen. Presumably much of the Cockney lingo like "lovely jubbly" and "you plonker" will have to be scrapped and a lot of humour based around the British class system reworked.

The pilot will be scripted by Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley, the writers behind American hospital sitcom Scrubs. The American Rodders and Del Boy haven't been confirmed yet but Steve Carrell, star of the hit US version of The Office, could be a possibility for Del Boy. In 2010, he said that a remake of the show would be his "dream role", adding that "The British do sitcoms better than anybody else in the world. I think with the right scriptwriters and cast we could do Only Fools and Horses justice. If anybody wants to help me do a remake, I'd love it."

And who would his ideal fellow cast members be? The Wedding Crashers' Vince Vaughn as Boycie, Ben Stiller as Grandad and Anchorman's Paul Rudd as Rodders. Well you know what they say. He who dares...
