The sketch and stand-up duo scoop the inaugural Funny Women Award.

Sketch and stand-up duo Thankless Child (AKA Liz Black and Freya Slipper) were crowned Funny Women Award winners last night at the Leicester Square Theatre final after perfoming a triumphant set of observational comedy, silly banter and songs.

The pair who met at Edinburgh University while performing in an improv troupe, have won a week’s luxury holiday for two at the five-star Londa Hotel in Cyprus.

Last night, the girls tweeted: "HOORAY! We won the @FunnyWomen Awards 2010. Every act was amazing. We love everyone and everything."

The 12 finalists who also included: Jessica Fostekew, Sarah Hendrickx, Alison Thea-Skot, Helen Arney, Abigoliah Schamaun, Iona Dudley-Ward, Clare Lomas and Lindsay Sharman, were whittled down from an entry list of over 350 new female comics from across the UK.

Runners up for the main award were stand-up Julia Clark and comic songstress, Rachel Parris, while the Variety Award was won by character act Gemma Whelan, as ‘Chastity Butterworth’.

Funny Women founder and producer Lynne Parker said of this year's competition:

“Last night’s final had everything: a huge variety of comedy with sketch, music, character and stand up and this was represented by the acts who were placed. All of the finalists were ‘winners’ and it’s a shame that we had to single anybody out – we plan to work with all of the acts over the next year to build our brand and get female comedy the recognition and profile it rightly deserves.”
