London on the cheap: we supply our top tips for keeping the costs down when out in the east end.

Fresher’s Week creeps ever closer, so much that you can taste the excitement. If the nights are drawing in, doesn’t this mean the fun starts earlier? Here are some events to get your chops around.
Film:
Alibi Film Club on Mondays
Free
The guys who run Young Turks Records own the bar and show a selection of cult and ‘good bad’ movies (Roadhouse, Total Recall, Black Dynamite, etc.) rather than film classics. Anchorman, Friday and The Big Lebowski have been previous highlights. Check the website on the Sunday prior to see what’s will be showing.

Food:
19 Numara Bo$ Cirrik
Mains from £2
When you are in the Dalston area the word kebab doesn’t have the dirty connotations it hold elsewhere in the capitol. You are spoilt for choice when choosing a high quality Ocakba?i (open coal fire) Turkish restaurant in the Dalston and Stoke Newington area. The ol’ Numara is cheaper most yet not at the expense of quality.

After Dark:
Efes Snooker Hall
Free
We’ve all been there. The music ends, the ugly lights go up but you can’t muster the drudgery of bed land. This has been such a consistent concern for Dalstonites that they’ve all taken to a mass exodus to this snooker hall due to it’s free entry and late opening time. We’ve seen a few celebs there, confused look upon their faces trying to work out which end of the cue works best.

Culture:
Arcola Theatre, Dalston
From £5 - £11 (Concessions)
Opening shows for the first ten performances of long-run productions start at only £10, or you can pop down there for Pay What You Can Tuesdays (£5 recommended donation). Get there early if you want to take advantage of this offer as they can only be purchased on the evening on first come first served basis. And not only is it cheap – it's brilliant too, one of the finest small theatres in London we say.

Shopping:
East End Thrift Store
From £5
There may as well be a fashion police checkpoints scattered around Tower Hamlets and Hackney lest someone be seen not wearing vintage rags. The retro shops sprinkled along Brick Lane can be a great place to start, but tend to be severely overpriced. The genuine bargains can be found just off the Whitechapel Road at the East End Thrift Store, and they play host to occasional parties too.
