Lezz Go!

The Depreciation Guild would probably sound very good in a John Hughes movie – maybe in a sequence of scenes that ultimately result in the lead boy getting to kiss the lead girl, or just as a soundtrack to teenage turbulence in all its glory. You can experience this hedonistic teenage rush at The Buffalo Bar on Friday night where this feisty threesome come to play.
Their blistering, bubbling indie pop bounces of the walls on a crest of uplifting melodies and softly-spoken vocals. There's definitely a drop of The Cure in their sound but they also wear alternative rock influences on their sleeves with their sound possibly even drifting into a 'sunshine-grunge' category. There is also an electronic edge on songs like 'My Chariot' which begins with a simple melody before bursting into life.
They released their second album 'Spirit Youth' earlier this year – and stand-out track 'Crucify You' is quite possible the finest indie song you'll hear in 2010, with a fast-paced verse leading into a delightfully, effortlessly energetic chorus. We catch up with vocalist and guitarist, Christoph Hochheim ahead of their gig to find out a bit more the boys from Brooklyn.
The Depreciation Guild 'Dream About Me' by kaninerecords
What's behind the name?
A long history of archaic technology worship, both musical and otherwise. It basically means a club for things that have lost their value.
Do you have a band mantra?
"Lezz go!"
How did you get together?
Through a series of random connections. I met Kurt (guitar/bass) though a mutual college friend. Then, my brother (Anton Hochheim – percussion) joined shortly thereafter. And finally, Raffi (synths) used to be a music student of Kurt's.
What did your first band practice sound like?
Like two guitars plugged into tiny practice amps competing with 8-bit tracks blaring from our computer speakers.
What are your biggest musical influences?
Prefab Sprout, Cocteau Twins, Gangway, Yellow Magic Orchestra.
Name two-non musical influences?
David Lynch, Tim and Eric (An American sketch show pairing).
Why is Brooklyn so good at making bands at the moment?
Something in the water?
What can we expect from your live show?
Loud noises, good times
Best gig so far?
Probably the Monolith Festival at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, hands down the most gorgeous place we've ever had the pleasure to play.
How does the song writing process work?
We usually start with a melody, work out the structure on guitars, then hit the sequencers and programme the parts.
Do you buy music from record shops or online?
Both!
You're going on a trip to the moon, you can only take three records – what would they be?
1. Gangway – 'Sitting in the Park'
2. OMD – 'Architecture and Morality'
3. Cocteau Twins – 'Heaven or Las Vegas'
