Bunkers, Hotdogs and Open Studios - Editor's Choice, Exhibitions

06 May, 2011
by: Tom Jeffreys

Every Friday our editors bring you their personal highlights of the week to come. Tom Jeffreys selects his top three exhibitions.

Martin Newth

From Tuesday 10th May
Martin Newth @ George & Jorgen
Black and white photographs, eerie negatives and a strange video installation all combine in Martin Newth's examination of the strange coastal defences built around Britain in anticipation of German invasion during the Second World War. This has been a fertile area for artists for some time now, but Newth manages to cast a strange, futuristic glow upon these never-functional structures.

From Thursday 12th May
Raul Ortega Ayala @ Rokeby
We love Raul Ortega Ayala. He immerses himself in strange new worlds for months (even years) on end, and then comes at these environments from strange new angles. Part one of this two-part series at Rokeby sees a selection of text-based works exploring last meals, videos about hotdog-eating competitions, Spanish festivals and even a Tower of Babel made of melting fat. Deeelish.

From Saturday 14th May
Open Studios @ Second Floor Studios
It's not every day that artists open their studios to members of the public, so when they do we generally sugeest you jump at the chance. Down in Woolwich, Second Floor Studios are opening up for the weekend, with the 130 artists who use the premises all inviting visitors into their studios to have a peek at their creative process and environment. Expect everything from conceptual art to hand-made jewellery.
