by: Tom Jeffreys

Every Friday our editors bring you their personal highlights of the week to come. Tom Jeffreys selects his top three exhibitions.

David Hepher

From Friday 20th January
An Elegy for the Aylesbury Estate @ Flowers East
Contemporary artist David Hepher's latest solo show at the Kingsland Road branch of Flowers focuses on the notorious Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, South East London – the site of Tony Blair's first speech as PM. Hepher's large-scale images [above] combine direct photorealism with a tinge of something like nostalgia.

From Friday 20th January
Material Matters @ Courtauld Institute
The tenth of the Courtauld's biannual student-run exhibitions is currently taking over the institution's East Wing. On display are works that explore the importance of their specific medium, by brilliant photographer Tom Hunter, oddball sculptors Heringa/Van Kalsbeek, Gabriel Dawe and everybody's favourite spot painter, Damien Hirst.

From Saturday 21st January
David Hockney @ Royal Academy
Everyone's been getting rather excited about this David Hockey exhibition at the Royal Academy - primarily because the tousle-haired artist has been making some recent works using an iPad. But it's really the latest example of Hockney's genius for reinvention and constant desire to explore new modes of expression. A Bigger Picture focuses on Hockney's depictions of landscape over a 50 year period.
