Landscape, Experiments and the Modern World – Editor's Choice, Exhibitions
02 September, 2011
by: Tom Jeffreys
Every Friday our editors bring you their personal highlights of the week to come. Tom Jeffreys selects his top three exhibitions.

From Wednesday 7th September
Artists' Laboratory 03 – Nigel Hall @ Royal Academy
This autumn the Royal Academy continues its recently launched Artists' Laboratories programme with an exhibition of work by Nigel Hall. This time, Hall – best known for his geometric abstract sculptures – is exhibiting over 100 drawings and sketches of landscapes from across the world. Whilst showing the same appreciation of form and space as his better known works, these drawings also demonstrate a sensitivity to something a little less carefully controlled.
From Thursday 8th September
Modern Frustrations @ Sumarria Lunn
A considered and intelligent response to the modern world's tendency towards information overload at Sumarria Lunn Gallery this September. There's sculptural installation by Blue Curry, non-referential symbolism from Tim Phillips (whose work bears an uncanny resemblance to Henrij Preiss), some intriguingly detailed yet minimal drawings by Ross Jones, and something as yet unannounced by oddball performance duo littlewhitehead.
From Friday 9th September
Lucy Wood @ Payne Shurvell
Lucy Wood's latest show at Payne Shurvell exposes the horror of human trafficking through a mixture of painting, photography, video work and installation. Returning from two months of research in Lampedusa, 'the gateway to Europe', Wood presents an exhibition that goes beyond the regional issue to look at the confusion, chaos and tragedy surrounding immigration to Europe in general. A rare UK solo show from a radical artist, this promises to be eye-opening exhibition.
