Myths, Prisons, and Existentialism - Editor's Choice, Exhibitions
20 May, 2011
by: Tom Jeffreys
Every Friday our editors bring you their personal highlights of the week to come. Tom Jeffreys selects his top three exhibitions.

From Monday 23rd May
Francesca Lowe @ Riflemaker
Highly influenced by anatomical drawings, the work of contemporary painter Francesca Lowe is characterised by a fusion of the foul and the fascinating; the results are somehow grand and frantic at the same time, with a complex (and occasionally impenetrable) symbolism. This summer sees Lowe reinterpret the myth of the Three Graces for her solo show at Riflemaker.
From Tuesday 24th May
Perfect / Imperfect @ House of Detention
A human hair chandelier set inside the walls of a Victorian prison cell? Weird. And the RAD Gallery's latest show Perfect / Imperfect has other treats on offer too; including Nicholas Paget's sweet-toothed table made from shimmery white sugar. And Swedish designer Pal Rodenius' interactive work Consumaker, which encourages everyone to get involved with a bit of design.
From Saturday 28th May
Exam. @ Transition Gallery
An exhibition of work by some of my favourite contemporary artists at Transition Gallery this summer. The spiel – about being "a study of externalised anti-social existentialism" – sounds a bit silly, but with works by Boo Saville, Julie Cockburn and Alex Ball all on show this looks like a cracker. Expect dark visions and technical rigour.
