Past, Future, Apocalypse, Utopia - Editor's Choice, Exhibitions

20 January, 2012
by: Tom Jeffreys

Every Friday our editors bring you their personal highlights of the week to come. Tom Jeffreys selects his top three exhibitions.

Rowena Hughes

From Wednesday 25th January
Back to the Future @ Breese Little
A strong week for London's more interesting commercial galleries kicks off with Breese Little's exploration of the retro-futurist tendency in contemporary art. Exploring the premise that you have to look back to look forward, there's work on show by some really promising artists like Rowena Hughes [above], Sam Burford, Sam Griffin and Viktor Timofeev (fresh from his solo show at Hannah Barry). I really like the collage aesthetic in evidence across the exhibition.

From Thursday 26th January
Immortal Nature @ Edel Assanti
After their attention-grabbing presence at London Art Fair, Edel Assanti are now hosting an exhibition curated by one of my favourite contemporary artists, the brilliant Gordon Cheung. Themed around the many prophesies that asserted the world would end in 2012, the exhibition takes place across all the floors of the gallery and features work across a range of media by a host of talented artists. Should be a cracker.

From Friday 27th January
Utopia @ Hoxton Art Gallery
Hoxton Art gallery round off this rather exciting week with an exhibition themed around the notion of Utopia, tracing it back to Thomas More's strangely ambivalent text of 1516. Featuring work painting, drawing and sculpture by four contemporary artists, the show explores ideas around the dream of the future, as well as the image of the gentleman traveller evoked in More's originary tale. Look out in particular for the delicate, playful sci-fi landscapes of Wieland Payer.
