The Real Van Gogh - The Artist and his Letters, Royal Academy 2010

World Photography Awards @ Art Work Space
From 20th January
The Sony World Photography Awards exhibition stops off in London for the UK leg of its worldwide tour: there’s images across a range of genres like fashion, music, sport, advertising and architecture.

The Real Van Gogh @ Royal Academy

From 23rd January
This is the kind of thing the Royal Academy does best. An exhibition seeking to really get to the heart of one of the most consistently fascinating figures in the history of art - Vincent Van Gogh – with around 65 paintings, 30 drawings and over 35 original letters written by the artist (mainly to his art-dealer brother Theo).

Henry Moore @ Tate Britain

From 24th February
Moore's immediately distinctive sculptures - all rounded organic curves, power and gentle humour - set him apart as one of the great artists of the twentieth century. With over 150 works on show, this should be a cracking exhibition.

Richard Hamilton @ Serpentine
From 3rd March
This March, the Serpentine Gallery kicks off its 40th anniversary year with the first major London exhibition of Hamilton's work since 1992. Hamilton is sometimes credited as the inventor of Pop Art.

Hackney Wicked
30th July – 1st August
The wonderful, innovative and fun Hackney Wick art festival returns for a third year of open studios, experimental exhibitions, collaborative events and parties. Mother Studios, The Residence, Elevator Gallery and Schwartz lead the way, while Decima – ever-unpredictable – provide the icing on the cake.

Gaugin @ Tate Modern
From 30th September
Unbelievably this is the first major exhibition dedicated to the works of Paul Gauguin to grace London in over 50 years. This promises to be one of the shows of 2010.

Turner Prize @ Tate Britain
From 5th October
Every year art gets tabloid coverage courtesy of the Turner Prize. Somehow it manages to be both dull and controversial at the same time – well at least the Stuckist protest is always entertaining.

Frieze 2010
14th-17th October
Frieze Art Fair plonks its big self down in Regent's Park for four days of contemporary art buying, selling and cogitation. It’s always a slightly weird event but essential viewing for anyone even vaguely art-minded.

Zoo 2010
October (exact dates tbc)
Smaller, edgier, more fun and more exciting than Frieze, Zoo is one of the highlights of of the cultural year. 2009 saw them skip across town to Shoreditch, which rather suited the cutting edge nature of the fair. Fingers crossed for wonderful things again in 2010.

GSK Contemporary @ Royal Academy
From 15th November
The third installment of the Royal Academy’s branded foray into the wide world of contemporary art. The first was a bit of a mess, the second somewhat patchy, but we’ve got confidence that third time lucky, they’ll ace it.
