Clerkenwell braces itself for Design Week 2012

The annual festival returns for a third year in EC1.

Clerkenwell celebrates its third annual design festival next week, with three days of exhibitions, workshops, talks and product launches showcasing the best in furniture and product innovation.

With more architects and designers per square mile than anywhere else in the world, the festival recognises EC1's place as the engine of the UK's design industry, with 40+ showrooms opening their doors to the public across the three days. Acting as something of a centrepiece to the event is Ross Lovegrove's six metre-tall Solar Tree (pictured), an eco-friendly cluster of LEDs which will light up St John's Square until September as Clerkenwell's contribution to the Olypmpic period (not a million miles away from Malcolm Robertson's 1996 Railway Tree, which is, incidentally, in Stratford).

As ever, the event looks to include elements of Clerkenwell's local history, providing an interesting juxtaposition to the contemporary designs. Three interesting and historic spaces – the Farmiloe Building, The House of Detention (a former Victorian prison) and the crypt at the Order of St John's, will all be hosting exhibitions, while the tiny 17th century inspired Small Coal Man's Travelling Theatre will be home to daily performances. After spending an evening exploring the vast Farmiloe Building at last year's Secret Cinema, we're especially looking forward to seeing Fluid, a dramatic LED light installation by Beau McClellan, as well as the Hogarth inspired pop-up bar 'Gen Lane'.

Clerkenwell Design Week runs from 22nd-24th May.
Entry is free with registration from the CDW website.
