Yessirrr....

If you'd read last week's Hot Mix 3, you'd have heard the bouncy house gem 'Wasn't Like That', the debut release from Midland's based producer Polkadot, part of the wave of young producers raiding the vaults for hip hop and RnB samples from the generation before them. In our opinion, Wasn't Like That is among the finest examples doing the rounds at the moment, and the ever brilliant MadTech seem to think the same, releasing the tune this week as part of their MTDL download series. Here we caught a few words with the boy.

Where are you from?

I'm from a small village called Codsall about 6 miles outside the centre of Wolverhampton.

Why the name Polkadot?

This is going to be a really rubbish answer but I either have no idea or I can't remember. I honestly don't know why I chose the name Polkadot. Sometimes I wish I could change it but I suppose it's not too bad.

What made you start looking back for old hip hop and RnB samples? Did you listen to the tunes the first time round?

Yeah, I've been thinking about this lately, the music that I was listening to whilst I was younger. I do remember going through a phase when I moved into year 5 and being at a different school, with different people. All my classmates would be playing all this R&B/Hip-Hop which at the time I really wasn't into. But after a while I succumbed to their influence and got into it. So yeah, big up 5JH!

Your biggest influence production-wise so far?

I'd definitely say the whole reason I wanted to make the type of music I make has been down to the first Disclosure EP. I was making music before that, but it really made me try a lot harder, seeing as they're around about the same age as me. But as far as influences go I'm influenced by everything.

Who else are you listening to?

At the moment I'm listening to a lot of Panda. I'm loving all of AppleBottoms new stuff too. There seems to be a lot of new producers popping up from just about everywhere.

Future plans?

Hopefully I'm going to start work on a new EP. I've also got some remixes in the pipeline too. At the moment I'm focusing 100% on production so expect to hear a lot more new music from me!
