Croydon's Dub CLub

The godfather of UK dub throws a party in his backyard.

Much has been made of Croydon's role in the birthing of the now international music phenomenon – dubstep. But it has a place in the history of dub that goes back much further, to the late seventies. The reason: Croydon is the home of Mad Professor and his world famous Ariwa studio and label.

Mad Professor started fiddling with electronics at the tender age of 10 and has produced and written with the likes of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Massive Attack, Jah Shaka, Sly and Robbie, The Orb, and Sade. Which makes him a bit of a legend to say the least.

It's an exciting prospect, therefore, to hear that he's rebuilding part of his studio, complete with reel to reel Ampex tape machines and analog desks, in the wood panelled confines of the Croydon Clocktower on Wednesday 1st September.

Croydon's Dub Club is set to be a very special night, but to complete the circle of dub from the '70s to the now there'll also be a set by Roly of dark dubsteppers Vex'd. Rather than play his usual style, however, this time he's delving into his extensive collection of dub 45s to make the speaker boxes and ribcages rattle.

There hasn't been a better reason to be out in Croydon of a Wednesday since Lee 'Scratch' Perry was scaring the neighbours during his time at Ariwa. Expect Croydon's Dub Club to become a fixture as the Croydon renaissance continues apace.
