Monday Hangover - The Weekly Round Up

Tomas Olesen's weekly round up of what we at the clubbing desk have been up to and interested by.

Power Rangers Are A Poor Man’s Voltron

On Monday we formed the DJ desk equivalent of Voltron (for our younger readers that's a bit like the thing they do in Power Rangers when they combine to form a Godzilla-sized Power Ranger...only better) and went en masse to check out the DMC World Finals at KOKO. It's all change at the DMC this year: gone are the gold-plated winners decks, replaced by ones made from black granite and studded with LEDs. They looked wicked but I can't help feeling that if I'd won I'd be a little miffed I didn't get the classic gold ones.

At the after party last year's champion DJ Shiftee showed off pictures of his gold ones in a special display case he has as a coffee table...now that's pimpin'. Also changing is the no gizmos rule. Next year will see contestants allowed to use Serato/Traktor style controllers. There was much booing from the audience when it was announced but Tony Prince told everyone to shut up. Frankly if it's good enough for him, Jazzy Jeff, Prince Paul, Grandmaster Flash, etc. it's good enough for the likes of you and me too.

How To Make Friends And Influence People

Not satisfied with one mid-week excursion yours truly went to check out the Big Chill House's fourth birthday party on Wednesday. The free booze flowed freely and I bopped around to great sets from Spindoctor and Toddla T amongst others. I left thinking to myself that Big Chill House really is a top venue that I need to check out more regularly. It’s a great space and the roof terrace is a brilliant smoking area. I'm not just saying that because they got me tiddly either...

Gentleman In The Pub Club And How Not To Review A Rodigan night.

Friday rolled around and I went off to interview the excellent Gentleman’s Dub Club who took me to the Prince Fatty album launch at Hootanany with them. It was an absolutely blinding evening but I ended up waking up in Catford, which wasn’t helpful.

Lachie interviewed the living legend that is Rodigan earlier in the week and had a nice chat but when he went to see him at Fabric for the launch of his Fabriclive compilation on Friday he completely missed his set, so no word on how that went. I’m sure it was his normal excellent mix of reggae you know and reggae you wish you owned.

Ed Sheeran Loves Being Awake, Diplo Sells Phones, And Gregory Isaacs Takes His Final Bow

Saturday saw Chloe going to check out the Bugged Out! 16th birthday bash at XOYO and loving some Erol Alkan, who smashed it despite sporting some kind of serious flu. The weekend just gone was also the first time in a long while that Chloe watched some TV and discovered that Diplo appears to be the new face of Blackberry. She’s utterly confused by the whole thing. All I know is I want one of those new Blackberry Torch phones as a direct result.

I went to spin records at the Lyrix Organix night at Rich Mix on Saturday. Great night, Ed Sheeran, Sarah Sayeed and Dizraeli and the Small Gods were all exceptionally good. Ed Sheeran I’d not seen or met before. I found him half asleep in the green room beforehand and considering he’d not really slept the night before it’s amazing he played so well.

Finally, the last few days have also seen the sad parting of Ari Up and Gregory Isaacs: two musical greats at different ends of the spectrum but both incredible artists. Ari Up’s version of 'Heard it Through The Grapevine' is even better than the original and Gregory Isaacs' back catalogue is one of the best ever.
