Few in the world of hip hop command such respect in the music industry at large as drummer and producer ?uestlove. The Doctor's Orders have managed to coax him down to East Village for an exclusive 3 hour DJ set.

The mighty Doctor's Orders have done it again, continuing their run of great hip hop guests from the states with the living legend that is ?uestlove. Best known as the drummer for The Roots over their eleven albums, ?uestlove has also worked within hip hop super-groups the Soulquarians (where he produced alongside the late great J-Dilla and Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad) and the Illadelphonics. More recently his unique production talents and musical knowledge were evident on Al Green's return to form, 'Lay it Down', and as if that weren't enough, he can count among his list of collaborators such greats as Jay-z, Common, Erykah Badu, and De La Soul to name literally a few.
Clearly a three hour DJ set from a man so deeply entrenched in the culture is a tantalising prospect for any student of hip hop. Three hours is probably just about long enough for him to take you on a journey through his favourite funk, soul, hip hop, and anything else he wants really.
When someone knows this much about music he could quite probably play tunes all night and maintain your interest throughout. Luckily for him he doesn't have to do it all alone as he'll be ably supported by soulful beat-smith du jour - Eric Lau. Of course no Doctor's Orders night would be complete without Spin Doctor himself manning the decks and he'll also be on the help-out. He had this to say about snagging ?uestlove for his only London DJ gig this year:
“We have had ?uestlove right at the top of our wish list of guest DJs from the start five years ago and despite getting close it has never quite came through, till now. There are few people that have made such a direct impact on what we play at our parties so to finally have him manning the decks is a real treat. I am so amped about this gig already!”
As if this wasn't enough to make this one of this year's must-see hip hop shows, the upstairs lounge is being taken over by some of the capital's finest crate diggers – Mr. Thing, Chris P Cuts, and DJ Lok. If this lot don't know about a dusty break on an obscure funk, soul, or disco record it's probably not worth knowing about. Rather than playing their usual hip hop bags they're dusting off those favourite rarities for an evening of classic breaks and soulful numbers to keep the vinyl nerds happy.
With Deke Evegreen of 3 Kings landlord fame opening things up with his box of ultra-rare 45s, this event should definitely be on your unmissable list. It'll most certainly sell out so get tickets early to avoid the crushing disappointment at not being able to see the owner of the finest Don King-style afro in music take to the decks.
Doctor's Ordeers Present ?uestlove is at East Village on Saturday September 11th
